Mayor's Message - Cemetery Point and First Street Traffic Update
6/12/2026
Dear Huntsville Residents,
As many of you are aware, the temporary closure of Port Ramp has significantly increased traffic traveling through Huntsville to access Cemetery Point Marina. While this increased activity affects many areas of town, the most significant impacts have occurred along First Street and near the Cemetery Point toll booth, particularly on Saturdays and holidays.
Over the past several weeks, Town officials, staff, and volunteers have been monitoring traffic patterns and evaluating ways to reduce impacts on residents, cemetery visitors, and emergency services. Last week, the Town formed a First Street Focus Group consisting of residents, Town Council members, and public safety representatives to evaluate both immediate and long-term solutions.
Based on our observations, the area between 6800 East and the Cemetery Point toll booth has become the primary congestion point when marina parking reaches capacity. To help manage traffic during peak periods, the Town will implement traffic control measures on busy weekends.
Beginning this Saturday, Town personnel will monitor conditions and coordinate with recreation officials throughout the day. When parking and launching facilities near capacity, traffic may be redirected before reaching the most congested areas. These measures are intended to preserve access for local residents, cemetery visitors, and emergency vehicles while reducing backups within town.
We recognize the inconvenience and frustration these conditions have created for many residents. While the current situation is largely outside the Town’s control, we are committed to working collaboratively with our state and federal partners to minimize impacts as much as possible throughout the summer season.
Thank you for your patience, cooperation, and support as we work through these unique challenges.
Sincerely,
Richard Sorensen
Mayor, Huntsville Town
